Welcome to pisa!
We are pleased to invite you to attend the
16th World Congress of the International Organization of Psychophysiology (IOP) which will be held in Pisa, Italy, from September 13-17, 2012.
Next year is a very special recurrence in the history of IOP, as the Congress will mark the 30th Anniversary of the birth of the Organization. Because of its long tradition in science in general and in neuroscience in particular, Pisa is a perfect venue to host such an important event and gather scientists from every corner of the world.
Walking around in Pisa, Galileo got the genial intuitions that would revolutionize the way of thinking of the time and give birth to the modern scientific method and teach humanity how to challenge the unknown.
But it is especially in the field of the study of brain function that Pisa has witnessed historic milestones. It is no coincidence that the first Journal devoted to neuroscience – Archives Italiennes de Biologie - was founded in Pisa in 1882 by Angelo Mosso, the Italian physiologist who, for the first time, showed that brain circulation changes selectively with neural activity – an observation that is at the basis of the powerful methodologies used nowdays to explore neural correlates of mental function. The Journal eventually ended up in the hands of another prominent Italian physiologist, Giuseppe Moruzzi, the father of the Pisa School of Physiology. Moruzzi and his fellows provided an enormous contribution to the knowledge of brain anatomy and physiology that, in turn, boosted the development of Psychophysiology.
Suffice to mention the ground-breaking studies on the sleep-wake cycle, the ascendent reticular formation, the control of balance and movement. Most of the greatest contemporary physiologists in Italy and abroad have been trained in the Moruzzi’s Institute in their youth.
Finally, Pisa has also been the cradle for the study and the treatment of mental disease. Since the appointment, half a century ago, of Prof. Pietro Sarteschi – now 91 years old - to be the first Chairman of Psychiatry in Italy, Psychiatry has transitioned from the mere confinement of the mentally ill to protect society to the development of a true “Medicine of the Mind”. This last one provides a multidisciplinary and integrated approach, by combining pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies, which is now successful in reintegrating patients within society in a ever increasing number of cases.
The 16th World Congress of the International Organization of Psychophysiology promises to be a memorable event from both a scientific and social perspective. We are profoundly honoured by the choice of the Board of Directors of IOP and we hope that you will join us in Pisa next September.
